The Smallest Bird

If you want to make friends with the smallest bird . . .
You’ll need to look small yourself.
Crouch down close to the ground like an itty-bitty frog.
But don’t jump because you might scare him.

And once the bird can see you mean him no harm, do all the things that any good friend would do: Show him your secret tree house. Give him snacks. Sing him a song. And if you think he’s ready, reach out to see if he’ll let you hold him. You’ll need to keep your hand open so he can fly away as all birds do—but don’t worry, when the smallest bird makes a friend as good as you, he will always come back to visit.
